Parents United …
Organize
An area-wide Chess Parents Association could do many things:
- Provide helpful information to parents and kids new to competition
- Provide structure and entertainment in the 'common room' during tournaments
- Explore ideas for forming public clubs, summer activities and the like
- Band together to present public institutions with proposals for facilities usage
Any parent who wishes to participate in the formation of such an organization, send your e-mail contact information with "Austin Area Chess Parent" in the Subject field. |
Help Your Child
Consider the following brief list of suggestions:
- Review the Activities page we offer with your children. Encourage them to try our suggestions and provide validation by suggesting a reasonable block of time for chess in their schedules. Adding a single hour of focused study and an hour of serious practice-play per week will result in a noticeable difference in their comfort, confidence and results in competitive trials.
- Let them know how important chess is to you by the degree of involvement and participation you afford it. Consider what you know of the studies that have linked chess to improved academics and socialization, and its importance in your family and culture. Remember that it is important for them to become "well rounded" … thus, chess cannot be their only focus, but it should likely deserve a degree of structured emphasis.
- Involve yourself to some degree with the school club, at events, or with other parents to help in whatever way you can! Improvements for all mean benefits for every individual!
